Individual Counseling
Is therapy the right choice for me?
Psychotherapy has done a horrible job at marketing itself. The general consensus (with some exceptions) is that signing-up for psychotherapy is akin to taking remedial summer classes - it’s only for those who didn’t “get it” the first time around.
Nothing could be further from the truth. My experience is that people who come to therapy are dissatisfied with the "curriculum" they received. In actuality, they are looking for advanced studies so as to rise out of a chronic sense of frustration and stuckness, a condition which I see as the norm of human existence, not the exception. Honestly, how many people do you know that are actually free, joyful, and peaceful?
Is therapy right for everyone? Probably not. There are other methods for healing and growth, of course. Yet, there is something so healthy and right to seek a trusted other's input and assistance in getting ourselves un-stuck! I don't see a way around that.
Do I have to choose a kind of therapy?
No, we will naturally fall into whatever style is the most useful for you. And, that can change from moment to moment. Being versed in many different approaches to therapy (see list, below), affords me the flexibility to shift from one modality to another according to what seems to fit whatever is happening in the moment. Of course, you have the choice of the focus and style of therapy. My job is to facilitate your process, not the other way around.
